Katie and Alex came back to Raleigh from being on holiday so they can head off to their first day of the new school year at Enloe High School.

This one is kind of a weird “first day” because it arguably applies to both of them.

Whilst Katie is a sophomore, this is her first time actually stepping foot in the school for classes after she did her freshman year in the virtual academy (and if truth be told, she *REALLY* rocked it without a whole lot of help from anyone else…she took the vast majority of her classes with virtual meetings on her Chromebook with a Mistletoe curled up at her feet).

Alex has made it to high school after spending an extra year at Oberlin Middle School which makes this the first school year in a very long time where all of the kids who are enrolled in the Wake County Schools are at the *SAME* school which also happens to be the closest one to where I live. We had a bit of a scare when his schedule at “Flight School” showed him enrolled in a regular set of classes before it finally changed in Powerschool and he actually did meet his new teacher at his entrance on the opposite side of the building from the conga line. We hadn’t heard anything at all and come to find out his teacher hadn’t even been allowed on campus until last week might well explain at least some of it. She certainly seems nice and is already taken with Alex…we’ll see how his new year goes. I’m sure he’ll charm the hell out of all of them like he has when he was the Mayor of Washington Elementary and Oberlin Middle School. 🙂

It felt kind of weird not having to drive to the other side of Raleigh with Alex and sit there for quite a while waiting for his school to take in 35 minutes after Enloe’s start time. But it’s a good weird because most of the routes from Enloe to Oberlin are traffic-ridden and just plain suck!

It was also weird getting back to the house so early…but I think I can get used to this.

No one knows how this year will go but for right now it’s masks on indoors at school and hopefully between that and the number of fully vaccinated students that they can keep the schools open. The early numbers aren’t particularly encouraging but we’ll deal with whatever comes our way.

We always do. 🙂
