Katie was off doing some lacrosse training so we had some time to kill with a certain furry and four-legged family member who seriously loves the nearby dog park.

Today would be seeing what the D850 could do in the relatively low-light of the shade of the dog park and it did not disappoint in the slightest. These scenes of extreme shade and light tend to be the most difficult to get right out of the camera…expose for the shadows and you’ll blow out the highlights and conversely meter for the bright light and you lose detail in the shadows.

This is why I’ve finally come round to shooting and using RAW images rather than the camera-processed JPEGs. RAW is a lossless format and if you really want to play with exposure compensation to fix both the light and shadowed areas, you pretty much have to do it in post-production. In this case, I think just letting Lightroom auto-correct the exposure does good enough for this purpose! 🙂
