Thanks to the teachers having a work day, Julia had the lovely idea of visiting her newly discovered bagel/deli in McGee’s Crossroads and then wandering over to Dix Park for a picnic and afternoon enjoying the lovely weather and the daffodils in bloom!
Big Steve’s in McGee’s Crossroads (right at exit 319 on I-40) not only has delightfully tasty bagels but they’ll do them up however you want them. Katie opted for a burger on hers and Nicholas and I split a Philly cheese steak and a reuben bagel. Alex was perfectly happy with his treat from McDonald’s and Mistletoe was happy with whatever she could scrounge off of everyone!
After fighting the nasty traffic back toward the Dorothea Dix campus which is being converted into Raleigh’s idea of NYC’s Central Park, the first order of business was a photo shoot with the promise of lunch and imminent starvation to keep us on the task!
One photo shoot and lunch later, everyone else took a bit of a walk round the meadow whilst I enjoyed playing with the 105mm f2.8 macro lens to get some extreme closeups of the daffodils. Then it was on to the 14-24mm ultra-wide for some Central Park-style shots of the downtown skyline in the distance.
Mind you, there will rarely be a photo session that doesn’t see the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens get fitted to the D810 and this was no exception…just in time to catch Mistletoe coming back to our little camp with her tongue hanging out about to the ground.
Of course, all good things must come to an end sooner than we wished it to as Nicholas and I had a date at Enloe later that night for marching band duty at the footy match. But all in all, a lovely day out and I can’t wait to see what Raleigh does with Dix Park…it may not be as large or impressive as Central Park but it’ll still be a lovely place to hang about for generations! 🙂
