This is certainly one of Washington Elementary’s more off-beat traditions, especially considering that none of these kids would have ever remembered seeing the 1970’s “Gong Show” and presenter Chuck Barris at the height of his powers.
Three years ago, the teachers manning the gong dressed up as characters from “The Muppet Show” and Mr Staley does a spot-on impression of Kermit that almost steals the show. This year, the critics surrounding the instrument of doom are doing the Star Wars theme.
The format is the same as the show…various kids or groups of kids take the stage and do their schtick and the teachers offer up wisecracks on their erasable boards and occasionally (and mercifully!) wield the mallet of doom to end the performance early.
Katie and Alex did a duet that won rave reviews from the panel so no gong for them! Some of their classmates were not so lucky… 🙂
