After the two previous Snowpocalypses had fizzled mightily, at last we had a proper one to let Nicholas get a feel for driving in the snow, ice, and slush and his mother thought it’d be a good idea to let him practice driving in these adverse conditions.
Fortunately for us, we had a nice test track next door at the Rogers Lane Elementary car park to let him get some time behind the wheel!
Let’s just say he’s not a huge fan of driving in snow!
Truth be told, it’s not fun for any of us who have to do so even when we’ve spent an appreciable amount of time in conditions we very rarely see here in the capital area of North Carolina. More often than not, the snowpocalypse rarely comes to fruition and we’re more often forced to contend with black ice and falling branches leading the power outages due to ice storms.
It doesn’t help matters that NC DOT likes to plough the snow off the roads to get down to the ice that you can’t really drive on without seriously wondering about the state of your underbritches afterward!
Anywho, Nick at least got some time behind the wheel on the snow and did manage to step the back end out slightly a couple of times.
It’ll take time and more practice and he’ll eventually get there.
And as harrowing an experience as he felt this session was, he’ll be thankful to have a chance to do it in a controlled setting rather than take his chances out on the roads one day when we can’t drive him to and from work.
Hopefully now he’ll have seen that as long as you don’t do anything stupid that your car can’t handle, driving on snow and the occasion bits of ice is something to be respected and treated with the healthy amount of fear (primarily of the other drivers who think they’re NASCAR drivers and will fly past you on roads not suitable for driving like maniacs and yobboes).
But at the end of the day, it’s not something that should always keep you in the driveway if you don’t need to stay there. 🙂
He’ll get there. I have faith…
