Nicholas’ vocabulary keeps growing by leaps and bounds. We’ve already chronicled how he sends us off to our respective shifts of work in an earlier entry but today we get a new word with an interesting twist.

It’s been proven many times over that children are so much better at picking up language than adults, particularly when it comes to context. That’s why you see so many early age Spanish immersion classes out there these days…get ’em young and the results are often quite spectacular. It’s especially impressive when you consider that English is one of the hardest languages to learn because there is so much idiom and odd construction that just isn’t obvious to non-native speakers.

Today was a normal day for Nicholas…that means he was running at his usual frenetic pace. If you’ve never really experienced that up close and personal, it’s hard to understand that he really can drive you absolutely nuts when he sets his mind to it. We love you kid but sometimes you can be a bit overwhelming…and on this particular day, he really was driving Mommy absolutely nuts and he was advised of this.

So a few minutes pass and Mommy says something else to Nicholas and his reply was truly priceless.

NUTS!

Context is a weird thing and in this case, we’re not really sure how he came to unintentionally echoing General Anthony McAuliffe’s famous reply to a German surrender demand at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. But it was funny nonetheless! Here is a child that has probably never heard that word used in that particular fashion and not only did he make the conceptual leap to use it, he used it in proper context (as in nuts to you!).

Kids just say the darnedest things sometimes, eh?

Speaking of which, cousins Patrick Samuel and Mairin came over to play today whilst Grammy, Patrick, and Suzette were off to raid A Southern Season in Chapel Hill. They played out in the back yard on the jungle gym, had some time for arts and crafts. We even had a cupcake-making session for the kids and it’s apparent that all of them really like making cupcakes! A good time was had by all!
