Every now and then, I’ll have a couple of items that I need to pick up at Wegman’s for Julia which is much more conveniently located near where I live.
Katie’s lacrosse training had been canceled (which was rather sad because it was an absolutely gorgeous day in the 70s after the deep freeze of the week before!) so we’re off to Wegman’s after collecting the kids from school.
Katie’s rocking a NC State Wolfpack training ensemble. Trust me, that detail will become important in a bit… 🙂
So we’re wandering through the aisles and finally end up in the frozen foods section where the bags of hash-browned potatoes can be found.
We grab the appropriate package and I turn to Katie and ask her if there’s anything else she can think of that is needed.
Katie often teases me about having a face that is very definitely not made for poker.
Well, let’s just say there are times that she’s just as guilty of ineffectively hiding her true feelings and her smile was a dead giveaway that I’d asked the wrong question of her.
I’m constantly teasing her about asking questions properly. One of the pet peeves when I was growing up was asking “can I?” which would invariably get a “well, can you?” response, sometimes more than once until the light bulb went off and I’d change it to “may I?”
To keep Katie from nailing me in the same way, I realised I needed to rephrase the question to “is there anything else she *WANTS*”?
These are the sorts of moments a father truly dreams of as Katie tries desperately to avoid giving in to one of the biggest blushes you’d ever see. A blush so red that it actually competed with the dark red colour of her NC State sweatshirt!
She and I communicated without words that we were both thinking of a slightly different colour…a rather lurid shade of pink that one finds just across the car park from Wegman’s at this posh cookie store called Crumbl that she’s been known to haunt from time to time.
I’m sure it will come as a huge shock that we did indeed end up there before fighting our way to the I-440 motorway to head back to the house… 😉
