It’s hard to believe but tonight is Enloe’s final game of the women’s lacrosse season at the Sanderson HS neutral site.
Enloe welcomed back a couple of scorers who missed the previous game against Broughton and that immediately paid dividends with the lead 14 seconds into the first half. The Pride answered back with a vengeance soon afterward but Enloe would put a couple more past their keeper and put the finishing touches on their season.
They started out a group that had nine seniors and then most of the other girls had never played lacrosse before starting training in the fall and a lot of those younger girls ended up on defence. And that was a recipe for a long season full of lopsided games as they learned to play together as a team.
And play together they did…every game they played hard up until the final whistle, they played for each other, and they played hard for their school.
But most importantly they grew together as a team and I dare say more than a few friendships blossomed during this season. You could definitely see that they were definitely getting that chemistry that comes from experience and they were playing much better against more experienced sides than when they started the season.
What the rest of the teams they competed against will remember most is that the Enloe girls supported and celebrated each other no matter what the score or time on the clock.
They’ll remember that well after the scores are long forgotten.
For now it’s time to take a break from the grueling season of matches and training sessions and turning their attention to recruiting pretty much any girl they can lay their hands on for the season to come to try to replace the seniors who are graduating. That’s not going to be an easy task and next season may well be as much of a challenge but I’ve no doubt the girls staying behind who are now the veterans on the team will do well no matter the odds.
They play hard for each other until the very end. They don’t know any other way to play. 🙂
